Korea‘s tourism deficit reached a 10-year high in the first quarter of this year, 2017. The number of inbound travelers have decreased following the Beijing’s obligation of travel restrictions in respondence to the deployment of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) battery in korea.

According to the industry data released on May 11,2017, ‘the tourism deficit amounted to US$3.74 billion from January to March. The number of tourists declined to 63.6% in April, compared to the year before. Outbound travelers numbered 6.5 million, compared to 3.7 million inbound visitors.’ As you can see, Chinese tourist arrivals to Korea seemed to fall significantly during the THAAD conflict.

However, there are some arguments for other aspects. Rich tourists from other areas in Asia, such as Japan, Thailand, Singapore have rather increased than before the THAAD issue, due to the decrease of China’s tourists. Also, domestic tourists are turning to famous tourist attractions where they could not dare to visit because of lousy chinese tourists.

After the Thaad conflict between South Korea and China, Chinese tourist arrivals to Korea seemed to fall due to the  Chinese Government's obligation of travel restrictions.

However, VVIP tourists from Japan, Thailand, Singapore etc. have rather increased in number than ever. Domestic tourists also enlarged in hotplaces or famous tourist attractions in Korea.

It is true that Chinese tourists gives some industries the chance to acquire big profits and the situation that Korea is facing now is not at its best. But since many Koreans are able to use domestic attractions in a more calm atmosphere and other people from different countries have also shown the same reaction, there are some arguments that the dispute hasn’t only caused  harm to our tourist industries. Also the fact that Chinese tourists come to Korea and only visit restaurants or shops that the Chinese people run, it tells us that their visit is not literally profitable to us and that the harm does not only effect Korean tour industries.

However maintaing a bad relationship with China isn’t what we are looking for. Moreover, there are certainly bad circumstances that will be triggered. We should think of a way to solve these problems in a way that can be profitable for both countries.
