Interview with Fashion Designer Kyungmi Han

(English)

KBS2 DRAMA BLACK KNIGHT POSTER

Kyungmi Han is a fashion designer of the current KBS drama on craze—‘The Black Knight: The Man Who Guards Me’. This fantasy drama, starred by Rae-won Kim, Se-kyung Shin, Ji-hye Seo and Mi-hee Chang, is on air every Wednesday and Thursday with its complex triangle-love story. Fashion designer Kyungmi Han may be unfamiliar to the audience. However, she participated in the CREATOUS MAGAZINE FASHION SHOW in Osaka this June 2017 as the representative of ‘Tint Block New York’, and received fervent accolades.

How was ‘Hae-ra’s (Se-kyung Shin) coat’ made?

As soon as Director Sang Woo Han gave me the scenario, I started the design by imagining the setting and the story in my head. Because Director Han emphasized that Hae-ra will be wearing the same coat from youth to adulthood, I had to come up with a well-made design that does not follow the transient fashion trend, so that the coat could satisfy both Hae-ra in her 10s and Hae-ra in her 20s.

Why is Hae-ra’s coat gaining much popularity from the public?

Recently, oversized clothes have become a new fashion trend. Hae-ra’s coat is a harmony of the classical couture style, contemporary vibrant color, and the trench coat fit. I believe that all these factors attributed to increasing popularity and attention.

Did you expect ‘The Black Knight’ to have the highest viewer rating among Wednesday and Thursday dramas?

Honestly, I anticipated this result, but I did not expect that it would be this much popular. The winter season of the drama and today’s cold weather are well-accorded together, and the shootings at exotic Slovenia made the drama more abundant and entertaining.

How did you come up with ‘Baek-hee coat’, followed by ‘Hae-ra coat’?

Se-kyung Shin’s coat was designed for Tint Block New York’s company. After the completion, Director Han and the staffs highly evaluated the hand-made Hae-ra coat. When the actress Chang Mi-hee (as Jang Baek-hee) saw the design, she came up with her desired concept of texture and colors to us, Tint Block. Her contributions helped us to make better color selections according to the context of the drama.

What does green symbolize to Baek-hee Jang?

Designs were made while I was informed with the script’s episode starting from one to six. In the script, the turning point for Rae-won Kim (as Moon Soo-ho/Lee Myung-so) is meeting the green vegetable juice lady (Baek-hee), because since then Soo-ho’s life became successful. In the drama, the grown-up Soo-ho’s first saying to Baek-hee is: “You wore green coat.” This phrase works as the key point that connects past and the future. Because of this, I made the vibrant and fancy green coat for Baek-hee.

Which coat do you feel more affectionate to? Hae-ra coat or Baek-Hee coat?

The green Baek-Hee coat. As Sharon gave a gift to Hae-ra, the coat itself showed its significance as a ‘lucky coat’ in the drama. However, Baek-hee coat is only mentioned once when the grown-up Soo-ho Moon met Baek-hee and said, “It was green coat when I met you last time, and it is green again.” Green for Soo-Hoo represents ‘luck’. Although there are not much explanations and mentions about Baek-hee coat in the drama, I have more affections towards the green coat that was heavily focused on the script prior to the step of designing.

What is your family’s initial reaction when the drama was on air?

Whenever my family gathers around to watch the drama, my daughter and son call out—“That’s my mom’s coat!” Although it is renowned as the “Hae-ra coat”, it is referred as “my mom’s coat” to my family members. When Hae-ra coat was worn in drama and gained much popularity, my children felt proud of me. It is embarrassing to say, but I heard that my kids boasted to the classmates that the designer of the purple coat in the drama (The Black Knight) is me and that their friends gave thumbs up. I always felt sorry for my children because I always went home late. However, when my name was shown on the subtitles at the end of the drama and my kids took photos of my name on the television screen, I felt that I was being rewarded and compensated. Even though I faced numerous hardships while designing Hae-ra coat, I was very grateful for being a respectful mother after the drama was on air.

Future plans?

Today, people are enjoying their daily lives by wearing fancy clothes. I hope every single person to be happy while wearing clothes and I want them to hear many compliments. Although the phrase: “Fine feathers make fine birds.” sounds like a cliché, I would like to design well-made clothes, which can be ‘fine feathers’ for the people who are wearing my clothes.
